Hamburg’s harbor is life itself – a gateway to the world, home of high hopes, the birthplace for oh so many beginnings and the background of just as many endings. Knowing from first hand experience what living and starting a career in this city feels like, working on the editorial for GQ Magazine, it felt very personal. It was like coming home.

Together with photographer Sabrina Rynes we wanted to pay a modern tribute to all the lonely sailors who left these harbors and – amongst others – inspired the city’s own Freddy Quinn.

He embodies the voice of longing that’s in every breaking wave and in the wind blowing between the giant cargo ships. Yet the Schlager singer never went to the sea himself… nor did our models.
